What would a burst actually look like?
"Bubble" gets used for two different things. One is a valuation bubble: prices detached from earnings, as in 2000, when the multiple did the work. The other is a capital-cycle bust: real earnings, real demand, but spending funded faster than cash flow can support, so the correction arrives through capex cuts and balance sheets rather than through a P/E collapse.
The 2026 setup is the second type. Three ambers, zero reds. On this framework the honest answer to "will the AI bubble burst in 2026?" is: not on the evidence available in early September 2026 — but the failure mode is identified, and it runs through capex financing, not through the earnings multiple. Why the multiple argument keeps being wrong
The most repeated bear case is "valuations are at dot-com levels". They are not, at index level. A forward P/E of 19.6 sits inside the post-2015 range. The dot-com peak was a different animal: index multiples in the high 20s against falling earnings, and leaders trading at triple-digit forward multiples on revenue that in many cases never arrived.
Comparisons to Cisco in March 2000 are the usual shorthand. Treat them carefully — the widely quoted forward multiple for Cisco at the peak comes from secondary retellings rather than a single clean primary filing, and the more useful contrast is structural: Cisco's customers were cash-burning telecom start-ups funded by capital markets, while Nvidia's largest customers are four of the most cash-generative companies in history. That does not make the spending safe. It makes the failure slower and more visible, which is exactly why a checklist beats a headline.

Where the real leverage sits: the capex chain
Follow the money one step past the headline. Hyperscaler capex is not a cost line in isolation; it is revenue for a chain of suppliers — GPU silicon, high-bandwidth memory, power and cooling equipment, colocation, and increasingly nuclear and grid-scale generation. Every one of those businesses is levered to the same four capital budgets.
That is why the market reaction on 23 July 2026 mattered more than the results did. Alphabet beat on sales (+24%), Google Cloud (+82%) and operating income (+30%), and the stock fell 7% in a session — entirely on the capex guidance and the free-cash-flow print. Investors are already pricing the financing question, not the demand question.
Two practical implications. What breaks first if condition 2 flips
If hyperscalers move from funding capex out of operating cash flow to funding it with debt at scale, the sequence we would expect — stated as a scenario, not a prediction — runs: credit spreads widen on the issuers, capex guidance gets trimmed on the next round of calls, suppliers with the least diversified customer bases re-rate hardest, and the index-level damage arrives through the concentration channel in condition 5 rather than through a broad earnings recession.
The level that invalidates this whole framing is simpler: if forward EPS estimates for 2027 start being revised down across the mega-caps while the index multiple holds above 22, then it is a valuation bubble after all and the checklist above is measuring the wrong thing.
How to position without calling the top
Calling the exact top of a capital cycle has a poor historical hit rate, and being early is indistinguishable from being wrong. The more defensible responses are structural: know your true exposure to the capex chain rather than your nominal sector labels, size positions so that a 30% drawdown in the leadership names is survivable, and hold assets whose drivers are genuinely unrelated.
