Will NVIDIA Stock Split Again? Split History and What Has to Happen First

NVIDIA has split six times since 2000 for a cumulative 480:1, most recently ten-for-one in June 2024. At $218.99 no new split is announced - here is the full history and what would have to change.
Key takeaways
- NVIDIA has completed six forward stock splits since 2000, a cumulative 480:1, most recently a ten-for-one effective 10 June 2024.
- No new NVIDIA stock split has been announced as of 6 August 2026, with NVDA closing at $218.99 and a market capitalisation of $5.30 trillion.
- NVIDIA is authorised to issue 80 billion common shares against roughly 24.22 billion outstanding, so another split needs no shareholder vote - only a reason.
- Past NVDA splits averaged -23% over the following year, but that reflects splits being announced near momentum peaks rather than any harm from the split itself.
- A split changes only the share count and nominal price: market cap, ownership percentage and valuation multiples are all unchanged.
No. NVIDIA has not announced a stock split, and at $218.99 (close, 6 August 2026) it is nowhere near the price level at which its board has ever acted. The last split was a ten-for-one that took effect on 10 June 2024, when the pre-split price was about $1,209. NVDA has split six times since 2000, for a cumulative multiple of 480:1, but every one of those splits followed a run to a nominal price several times higher than today's.
This page answers the three things people actually search for: what the split history is, what would have to happen for another one, and what a split would (and would not) do to a position.
Has NVIDIA stock ever split? The full history
NVIDIA has completed six forward splits since its January 1999 IPO. Pre-split prices below are the last regular-session close before the split date; post-split prices are the first session open on or after it.
| Effective date | Ratio | Pre-split close | Post-split open | Cumulative multiple |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 27 June 2000 | 2:1 | $165.94 | $82.25 | 2x |
| 12 September 2001 | 2:1 | $75.76 | $35.52 | 4x |
| 7 April 2006 | 2:1 | $61.22 | $30.48 | 8x |
| 11 September 2007 | 3:2 | $50.79 | $34.27 | 12x |
| 20 July 2021 | 4:1 | $751.20 | $187.30 | 48x |
| 10 June 2024 | 10:1 | $1,209 | $120.37 | 480x |
One share bought before June 2000 is 480 shares today. NVIDIA's own investor FAQ for the 2024 split states the purpose plainly: given "the significant appreciation of the company's share price in recent years", the split was "intended to make stock ownership more accessible to employees and investors". That is the only rationale the company has ever given.
Will NVIDIA stock split again in 2026?
Three conditions have to line up. Only one of them is currently in place.
1. Authorised shares - not a constraint. The certificate of amendment filed with Delaware alongside the 2024 split raised NVIDIA's authorised common stock to 80,000,000,000 shares. Roughly 24.22 billion are outstanding. There is headroom for another 10:1 split without a shareholder vote, so the legal machinery is not the blocker.
2. Price level - the actual blocker. NVDA closed at $218.99 on 6 August 2026, with a 52-week range of $164.07 to $236.54 and a market capitalisation of $5.30 trillion. The board acted at $751 in 2021 and at roughly $1,209 in 2024. Nothing about a $219 share price is inaccessible; fractional-share trading has removed most of what was left of the accessibility argument in any case.
3. A reason beyond optics. NVIDIA's stated capital-return priority is buybacks, with the dividend a token $0.01 per share per quarter post-split. A split does not return capital, so it is a housekeeping decision, not a strategic one.
Our view: the split question does not become live again until NVDA trades somewhere in the $600 to $800 range, which from here requires roughly a tripling. On the current trajectory that is a multi-year question, not a 2026 one. The next scheduled event that matters far more is the Q2 FY2027 earnings report confirmed for 26 August 2026. If you want the price-target side of the argument rather than the split mechanics, that is in our NVIDIA stock forecast for 2026.
What actually happened after each NVIDIA split
This is the part of the question that gets answered badly everywhere else. The folklore says a split is bullish. NVIDIA's own record says the opposite, and the reason is more interesting than the headline.
| Split | 6-month return | 1-year return | 2-year return |
|---|---|---|---|
| June 2000 | -50% | +28% | -52% |
| September 2001 | +44% | -72% | -49% |
| April 2006 | +63% | +1% | -6% |
| September 2007 | -45% | -70% | -53% |
| July 2021 | +30% | -4% | +145% |
| Average of the five | +8% | -23% | -3% |
| June 2024 (to 6 Aug 2026) | - | - | +82% |
The five-split averages come from YCharts data compiled in June 2024. The 2024 line is our own calculation: $120.37 at the post-split open against $218.99 on 6 August 2026, roughly 26 months, or +82%.
Our read on this table. The negative one-year average is not evidence that splitting damages a company. It is a selection effect. A board only splits after a violent run-up, so the split date is systematically placed near the end of a momentum leg - 2000 and 2007 were both cycle tops for the semiconductor complex, and both were followed by broad drawdowns that had nothing to do with the share count. The two splits that happened mid-cycle rather than at a top (2006 and 2021) produced a +63% and +30% six-month result and, in 2021's case, +145% over two years.
The practical conclusion: a split tells you the stock has already run a long way. It is a lagging indicator of momentum, not a forward signal, and it is a poor reason on its own to buy or to wait. Treat it the way we treated the same question for Palantir's non-existent split - the interesting variable is earnings, not arithmetic.
What a split does and does not do to your position
Take 40 shares at $218.99 - a position worth $8,759.60. In a hypothetical 10:1 split you would hold 400 shares at $21.90, worth $8,759.60. Nothing else changes:
- Unchanged: market capitalisation, your ownership percentage, price-to-earnings and every other valuation multiple, your cost basis in total, and your holding period for tax purposes.
- Changed: the nominal price per share, the share count, per-share earnings and the per-share dividend, all divided or multiplied by the same ratio.
The persistent myth is that a lower share price means the stock is "cheaper". It is not. A $5.30 trillion company is a $5.30 trillion company whether that is divided into 24 billion pieces or 240 billion. If a $219 share price is the obstacle, fractional shares solve it without any corporate action, and options traders are the only group for whom the contract-size change is a genuine practical difference.
What to watch instead
The variables that will decide NVDA's 2026 are data-centre revenue growth, gross margin defence against custom silicon, export-control policy, and whether hyperscaler capital-expenditure guidance holds.
