The altcoin season index is flashing mixed signals in 2026. We look at Bitcoin dominance, current readings on the main trackers, and whether ETH, SOL, XRP and the majors are set to outperform Bitcoin.

Key takeaways

  • Altcoin season index readings are mixed in August 2026, with most trackers scoring between 39 and 63 out of 100.
  • Bitcoin dominance remains above 56%, which historically means altcoins struggle to outperform Bitcoin.
  • Bitcoin is trading near $64,000, Ethereum near $2,300, Solana near $85 and XRP near $1.10 as of 20 August 2026.
  • The crypto market is not broadly pumping yet; most large-cap altcoins are rangebound rather than breaking out.
  • A true altcoin season usually requires Bitcoin dominance to fall below 50% and altcoin exchange inflows to exceed Bitcoin inflows.

The altcoin season index is sending mixed signals in August 2026. Depending on the tracker, it reads anywhere from 39 to 63 out of 100, with most models sitting in neutral territory. Bitcoin dominance is still holding above 56%, Bitcoin is trading near $64,000, and the major altcoins are rangebound rather than breaking out. So the short answer is: the crypto market is not broadly pumping yet, but conditions are more balanced than they were during the first half of the year.

This post explains how the altcoin season index works, what the current readings actually mean, where Bitcoin and the largest altcoins are trading, and what would have to change for altcoins to take the lead.

What is the altcoin season index?

The altcoin season index is a simple rule-of-thumb indicator. It asks: over the last 90 days, have the top 50 altcoins outperformed Bitcoin? If more than 75% of them have beaten BTC, the market is in "altcoin season"; if fewer than 25% have, it is "Bitcoin season". Anything in between is a neutral or mixed phase.

The metric is useful because it captures relative strength, not absolute price. A crypto market can rise and still be in Bitcoin season if BTC rises faster than alts. Equally, altcoins can fall and still be in altcoin season if they fall less than Bitcoin. That is why the index does not answer "is crypto up?" - it answers "are alts leading?".

Most trackers use a fixed basket of large-cap coins (Ethereum, Solana, XRP, Cardano, Dogecoin, Chainlink, Avalanche and others) and compare their 90-day returns against Bitcoin's. Smaller-cap or memecoin rallies do not usually move the index unless they are already in the top 50.

What is the altcoin season index today?

As of 20 August 2026, the major English-language trackers are not aligned. That is not unusual; different trackers use different baskets, different lookback windows, and different weighting rules. The range looks like this:

TrackerIndex readingInterpretation
CoinMarketCap Altcoin Season Index~44/100Neutral, leaning toward Bitcoin season
AltcoinSeasonTracker~63/100Neutral, closer to altcoin season
SignalEdge Altcoin Season Meter~39/100Bitcoin season
Coinbird Altcoin Index~58/100Neutral, balanced

The average of the four readings sits around 51/100, which is almost exactly neutral. The dispersion is the important part: no tracker is confidently calling altcoin season, and none is calling a full Bitcoin-only market either. The market is effectively rangebound and waiting for a catalyst.

Bitcoin dominance and what it is telling us

Bitcoin dominance - BTC's share of the total crypto market capitalisation - is the companion metric to the altcoin season index. When dominance rises, money flows into BTC faster than the rest of the market; when it falls, altcoins are catching up. In mid-August 2026, Bitcoin dominance is sitting between 56% and 59%, depending on whether stablecoins are included in the denominator.

Historically, the altcoin season threshold has been Bitcoin dominance below 50%. The last major altcoin season, from late 2020 through 2021, saw dominance fall from roughly 70% to below 40%. In 2025, dominance climbed back above 60% as ETF inflows and tariff headlines pushed capital into BTC. The current reading of 56-59% is better for alts than 65%, but it is still not the structural shift that usually drives the biggest altcoin rallies.

The global crypto market capitalisation is roughly $2.5 trillion to $2.6 trillion, with Bitcoin alone accounting for about $1.25 trillion to $1.5 trillion of that total. Stablecoins make up another large slice, so the non-BTC, non-stablecoin altcoin universe is smaller than a casual look at the headline market cap suggests.

Where are the major coins trading?

The "is crypto pumping?" question is hard to answer without looking at actual prices. Here is the snapshot as of 20 August 2026 across the major coins we cover:

CoinApproximate price7-day trendWhat is driving it
Bitcoin (BTC)~$64,000RangeboundETF flows, dollar strength, halving supply math
Ethereum (ETH)~$2,300Slight driftSpot ETF demand, scaling competition from L2s
Solana (SOL)~$85RangeboundMeme activity, network congestion debates
XRP~$1.10ConsolidatingSEC clarity, cross-border payments narrative
Cardano (ADA)~$0.40FlatGovernance, network upgrades
Dogecoin (DOGE)~$0.11FlatSocial sentiment, high-beta risk proxy
Litecoin (LTC)~$70FlatETF speculation, payment-use narrative
Tron (TRX)~$0.13FlatStablecoin transaction volume

Prices are approximate because crypto trades 24/7 on exchanges and indexes differ slightly. The overall picture is not a broad pump. BTC is holding a higher level, ETH is still below the $3,000 psychological zone, and the altcoins are mostly moving sideways. The only coins that look like they are "pumping" are the smaller mid-caps or memes, and those do not register strongly in the large-cap altcoin season index.

Why is crypto pumping - or not?

The "crypto pumping" question is really about catalysts. There are three main drivers being discussed in August 2026, and none of them is a guaranteed green light:

1. Spot ETF flows are mostly Bitcoin- and Ethereum-only. US spot Bitcoin ETFs have brought steady inflows, and Ethereum ETFs have been positive but much smaller. These products do not directly buy Solana, XRP, Cardano or Dogecoin, so the capital tends to pool in BTC and ETH first. That is one reason Bitcoin dominance has stayed elevated.

2. Macro and dollar conditions are mixed. The dollar index has been choppy, and Treasury yields have not broken decisively lower. A weaker dollar and lower yields usually help crypto as a whole, but the move has to be broad enough to lift smaller coins faster than Bitcoin. So far, the macro tailwind is mild rather than strong.

3. Token unlocks and supply remain a headwind for some altcoins. Several large-cap protocols have meaningful unlock schedules through the rest of 2026. New supply hitting the market can cap price performance even when sentiment is positive. That is why some altcoins look flat even as BTC holds firm.

The combined effect is a market where Bitcoin is the cleanest expression of the crypto trade, and altcoins need a specific catalyst to outperform. The "pumping" narrative is mostly coming from social media highlights of individual coins rather than broad market data.

What would trigger a real altcoin season?

Two conditions usually matter:

First, Bitcoin dominance needs to fall below 50% and stay there. That is the historical line in the sand. It does not happen quietly; it usually follows a period where BTC has already run and early-cycle capital rotates into higher-beta altcoins. As long as dominance is 56-59%, the structure is not yet in place.

Second, stablecoin supply or exchange inflows have to move into altcoins faster than Bitcoin. On-chain metrics such as exchange net flows for ETH, SOL and alt-stablecoin pairs can be leading indicators. The public index is a lagging 90-day summary, so the index itself will not flip early. Traders watch the dominance chart and the stablecoin flow data first.

Third, a strong narrative needs to take over. In 2020-2021 it was DeFi and NFTs. In 2024 it was Bitcoin ETFs and memecoins. In 2026, candidates include AI-agent tokens, real-world asset tokenisation, and Ethereum scaling. None of these narratives is dominant enough yet to pull the whole altcoin market up.

What to watch next

We would change our view if we saw any of the following: Bitcoin dominance dropping below 53% for several weeks, the altcoin season index reading above 75 on multiple trackers for at least two weeks, a sustained increase in altcoin exchange inflows relative to BTC, or a strong altcoin narrative drawing retail attention comparable to past cycles.

For active traders, the safest read is that the market is still in a Bitcoin-heavy regime. That does not mean altcoins cannot trade higher; it means that if you are betting on alts outperforming BTC, you are betting on a regime change that has not yet been confirmed.
